APPLICATION OF NON-PARAMETRIC TEST ON REPORTED CASES OF HEPATITIS B VIRUS ACROSS DIFFERENT HEMOGLOBIN GENOTYPES AMONG STUDENTS OF NIGER STATE POLYTECHNIC, ZUNGERU
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study examined whether significant differences exist in the prevalence of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection across different haemoglobin genotypes (AA, AS, and SS) among students of Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru. The research covered a ten-year period from 2015 to 2024, with data obtained from the School Clinic of the Polytechnic. The data were analyzed using the Friedman test to determine variations in HBV prevalence across the haemoglobin genotypes. The findings revealed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.002 < 0.05) in HBV prevalence among the genotypes. Specifically, students with the AA genotype recorded the highest rate of HBV positivity, followed by those with the AS genotype, while students with the SS genotype exhibited the lowest prevalence. Based on these findings, the study concludes that haemoglobin genotype significantly influences susceptibility to HBV infection among students. It is therefore recommended that the institution implement regular HBV screening programs, strengthen vaccination coverage, and promote continuous health education campaigns to reduce the risk and spread of HBV infection within the student population.
