Abstract

ABSTRACT This study evaluates user-centric collection development at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), specifically examining the information needs of undergraduate science students. Through a mixed-methods survey of 152 respondents (86.8% response rate), the research identifies key patterns: students primarily seek textbooks (26.3%), lecture notes (20.4%), and e-books (15.8%), with 41.6% using both print and digital formats. However, only 47.1% utilize the online catalog, revealing a gap in digital resource awareness. While 62% find collections adequate, major challenges include outdated materials, poor internet access, and insufficient research guidance. Satisfaction is high for staff assistance (77%) and seating (80%), but e-resources and WiFi services show notable dissatisfaction, highlighting critical areas for improvement. The study emphasizes the need for strategic upgrades to align SAZU’s library with user needs, including expanding digital subscriptions (e.g., EBSCOhost), regular user feedback systems, and enhanced ICT infrastructure. These measures aim to bridge gaps in accessibility and modernize collections, ensuring the library supports evolving academic demands. The findings contribute to broader discussions on academic library management in resource-limited settings, advocating for data-driven, adaptive approaches to foster student success. By implementing these recommendations, SAZU can serve as a model for peer institutions navigating similar challenges in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
