Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focused on the isolation and identification of beneficial microorganisms from soil samples collected in selected refuse dumping sites within the Gwallameji community, Bauchi State. The research aimed to evaluate the microbial potential of soils from waste sites, considering their role in organic matter degradation and possible application in environmental biotechnology. Four soil samples were collected from different dumping sites and analyzed for pH, ranging from 5.8 (acidic) to 8.1 (alkaline), indicating varying soil conditions that influence microbial diversity. Morphological assessments of microbial growth were conducted using Winogradsky column models containing different organic substrates newspaper (carbon), egg yolk (sulphur), and combinations thereof. Weekly observations showed progressive microbial development, with visible changes such as color shifts from mud brown to red-brown and the appearance of white stains, indicating microbial activity. By the fourth week, bacterial colonization became prominent, especially in the carbon-sulphur combination columns, signifying a rich diversity of beneficial microbes. The study concludes that soil from refuse sites within the Gwallameji community harbors diverse beneficial microorganisms, potentially useful in bioremediation and organic waste recycling. Further microbiological and biochemical characterization is recommended to identify specific microbial species and their functions.
