REPAIR OF A FAULTY MARCET BOILER IN THE THERMODYNAMICS LABORATORY OF THE RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The Marcet Boiler is a very essential and important apparatus in thermodynamics education that facilitates the study of pressure-temperature relationships and phase changes in water and steam, this makes it indispensable for mechanical engineering curricula. However, operational failures due to component degradation and poor maintenance such as thermal stress on heating elements, corrosion, or electrical faults, can render the boiler inoperative, hence disturbing educational activities and incurring significant replacement costs. It focuses on the systematic diagnosis and repair of a faulty Marcet Boiler, which aims at restoring its functionality by repairing it while providing a cost-effective and sustainable option to replacement. Through a comprehensive analysis of common failure modes including scaling on the heating element, corrosion in the pressure vessel, and sensor inaccuracies this project employs diagnostic techniques, repair methods, and preventive maintenance strategies to address identified faults. The research integrates principles from thermodynamics, materials science, and electrical engineering to develop a robust repair framework, ensuring the boiler’s safe and efficient operation. The findings demonstrate that targeted repairs not only extend the lifespan of laboratory equipment but also enhance students’ practical skills in troubleshooting and maintenance. This study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable equipment management in academic settings, offering a replicable model for repairing similar thermodynamic apparatus while promoting resourcefulness and cost efficiency in educational institutions
