THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY IN NIGERIA A CASE STUDY OF BORNO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The Boko Haram insurgency has emerged as one of the most devastating conflicts in Nigeria,
causing severe social and economic disruptions across the country, particularly in the
northeastern region. This study examines The Socio-Economic Effects of Boko Haram
Insurgency in Nigeria: A Case Study of Borno State. The study seeks to identify the major
socio-economic consequences of the insurgency on the people of Borno State, including loss
of lives, displacement, destruction of property, unemployment, and disruption of education and
public services. Data were collected through primary and secondary sources, including
questionnaires, interviews, and existing literature. The findings reveal that the insurgency has
led to widespread poverty, increased dependency on humanitarian aid, decline in agricultural
production, and collapse of local businesses. Socially, it has caused the breakdown of
community structures, family disintegration, and psychological trauma among residents. The
study concludes that while the Nigerian government and security agencies have made efforts
to combat the insurgency, more attention should be given to post-conflict rehabilitation,
education, and economic recovery programs. The researcher recommends improved security
measures, effective reintegration of displaced persons, and a community-based peacebuilding
approach to ensure sustainable development in Borno State and other affected areas.
