AN ASSESSMENT OF FEMALE MASS COMMUNICATION STUDENTS ATTITUDE TOWARD JOURNALISM CAREER: A STUDY OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC BAUCHI
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the attitudes of female Mass Communication students toward journalism career roles, focusing on female students of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi. The study sought to explore how socio-cultural factors, educational experiences, and personal aspirations influence students’ willingness to pursue journalism careers. A qualitative research design was adopted, using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions as the primary methods of data collection.
A total of 20 female students were purposively selected from the institution. Thematic analysis was used to interpret data collected from participants’ narratives. Findings revealed that although many female students have a positive attitude toward journalism, several factors hinder their active pursuit of the profession. These include gender stereotypes, lack of family support, limited female representation in newsrooms, and concerns about safety and work-life balance. However, mentorship and the presence of female role models in the field were found to inspire confidence and encourage participation.
The study concludes that there is a need for deliberate institutional and societal efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for aspiring female journalists. It recommends mentorship programs, curriculum reforms, and awareness campaigns to promote gender equality in media practice.
