EVALUATION OF LOCAL COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN SUSTAINING TOURISM IN NWANG COMMUNITY OF OGOJA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE (A CASE STUDY OF NWANG COMMUNITY)
Abstract
This study examines the involvement of local communities in sustaining tourism in Nwang Community of Ogoja Local Government Area, Cross River State. The research explores how community participation, cultural heritage, and local initiatives contribute to the promotion and long term sustainability of tourism in the area. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed, using questionnaire, interviews, and field observations to gather data from community members, local leaders, and stakeholders in the tourism sector. Findings reveal that the active participation of the Nwang community in decision making, preservation of cultural practices, and provision of hospitality services significantly enhances the growth of tourism. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, poor government support, and limited awareness hinder the full potential of community led tourism development. The study concludes that sustainable tourism in Nwang requires strong collaboration between the community, government, and private sector, alongside improved capacity building initiatives for local residents. Recommendations include the development of community based tourism policies, provision of infrastructure, and continuous sensitization of the community on the benefits of active involvement in tourism. This study provides useful insights for policymakers, tourism planners, and local communities on the role of grassroots participation in sustaining tourism in Nigeria
