Abstract

Traditional institutions have historically played significant roles in community governance and development in Nigeria. Despite the emergence of modern democratic systems, traditional rulers remain relevant in mobilizing people for grassroots development. This study examines the role of traditional institutions in community development, using Giade Local Government Area of Bauchi State as a case study. The study explores the involvement of traditional leaders in areas such as conflict resolution, education, health, infrastructure, and agricultural development. A descriptive survey method was adopted, and data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with selected community members and traditional authorities. The findings reveal that traditional institutions contribute immensely to community cohesion and development through leadership, mobilization, and mediation. However, challenges such as inadequate government recognition, limited financial resources, and political interference hinder their effectiveness. The study recommends that traditional institutions should be more formally integrated into the local government administrative framework to enhance sustainable rural development.
