STUDY OF FUNGI ASSOCIATED WITH SPOILAGE OF BANANA IN AZARE TOWN
Abstract
This research project focuses on the study of fungi associated with the spoilage of banana (Musa spp). In Azare Town. Banana is one of the most widely consumed fruits in the region, but its post-harvest losses are significant due to fungal spoilage. The study aims to isolate, identify, and characterize the different fungal species responsible for banana spoilage and to determine their prevalence. Freshly spoiled banana samples were collected from various markets and households within Azare Town and analyzed using standard microbiological techniques. Preliminary findings indicate that common fungal species such as Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp., and Rhizopus spp are frequently associated with banana spoilage. The study highlights the importance of proper post-harvest handling, storage practices, and fungal control measures to minimize losses and ensure food security. The findings will be useful for farmers, traders, and consumers in reducing economic losses and maintaining banana quality.
