Abstract

This study explores assessing the effectiveness of social welfare services on poverty alleviation in Nigeria: a study of Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State. Poverty remains a persistent challenge in Nigeria despite the establishment of numerous social welfare initiatives by both government and non-governmental organizations. Guided by the Social Welfare Theory, the research adopts a survey design with a sample of 80 respondents selected to provide insights into the availability, accessibility, and impact of social welfare programs in the area. The study investigates the types of services provided, the extent to which they reach the target population, their impact on beneficiaries' social and economic well-being, and the challenges hindering effective implementation. Findings reveal that while various services such as cash transfers, healthcare assistance, and educational subsidies exist, their accessibility remains limited due to poor infrastructure, corruption, inefficient targeting, and inadequate funding. Despite these challenges, beneficiaries reported notable improvements in livelihood and well-being where services were effectively delivered. The study concludes that social welfare services have the potential to significantly reduce poverty if properly funded, transparently managed, and widely accessible. It recommends improved budgetary allocations, increased public awareness, and streamlined implementation mechanisms to enhance the success of these programs.
