PROFESSIONALS PERCEPTION STUDIES ON THE IMPACT OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING ON SUSTAINABLE BUILT ENVIRONMENT IN SOUTHWEST, NIGERIA.
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of Building Information Modelling (BIM) on fostering a sustainable built environment in Southwest Nigeria, focusing on the perceptions of built environment professionals. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to assess BIM adoption, its specific features, and its contributions to sustainability in the Nigerian construction industry. The findings reveal a high level of BIM awareness (91.67%) among professionals, with Autodesk Revit and ArchiCAD being the most used software, and 3D modelling as the predominant feature. Professionals strongly agree that BIM enhances sustainable construction practices, improves energy efficiency, reduces waste, supports lifecycle assessments, and facilitates compliance with green building certifications. However, barriers such as high implementation costs, lack of skilled personnel, resistance to change, and inadequate government policies limit widespread adoption, with only 60% of organizations currently using BIM. Despite these challenges, there is optimism for BIM’s future, with 79.17% of respondents believing it will be widely adopted within five years. Recommendations include enforcing BIM mandates for public projects, providing financial incentives, integrating BIM into academic curricula, and fostering industry collaboration. This study underscores BIM’s transformative potential for sustainable construction in Nigeria and highlights the need for strategic interventions to bridge the gap between awareness and implementation.
