KNOWLEDGE AND PERCEPTION OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION STAKEHOLDERS ON TREE PROTECTION ON CONSTRUCTION SITES IN TORO AND DASS LGAS, BAUCHI STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the knowledge and perception of construction stakeholders regarding tree protection on construction sites in Toro and Dass Local Government Areas (LGAs) Of Bauchi State, Nigeria. It aims to identify the socio-economic characteristics of construction workers and assess their awareness of tree conservation. A total of 75 stakeholders were surveyed, revealing a demographic predominance of males (83.3%) and individuals aged 21-30 years (43.3%). The majority held tertiary education (59.3%) and had significant experience in the construction industry (76%).Findings indicate that while 72% of respondents have participated in construction activities and recognize the importance of trees, only 20.8% demonstrate a very high level of knowledge about them. Notably, 64.3% prefer to retain trees during construction, yet 64% also favor complete site clearance. Awareness of the benefits of trees, particularly for air quality improvement, is present among 51.1% of respondents. Despite some knowledge of legislation regarding tree protection, many stakeholders are unfamiliar with its specifics. Nevertheless, 80% advocate for stronger legislative measures. The study highlights a discrepancy between the intention to protect trees and the realities of construction practices, emphasizing the need for improved education on the ecological significance of trees and better integration of conservation efforts within the construction industry.
