Abstract

Onion (Allium cepa) is an essential vegetable widely consumed across Maiduguri, Borno State, but its high moisture content and nutrient composition make it highly susceptible to fungal spoilage during transportation, storage, and marketing. This study aimed to isolate and identify the fungi associated with onion spoilage in Maiduguri. Spoiled onion bulbs were randomly collected from major markets including Monday Market, Gamboru Market, and Custom Market. Samples were surface-sterilized, plated on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), and incubated for 5–7 days at room temperature. Emerging fungal colonies were purified and identified based on macroscopic characteristics and microscopic examination using lactophenol cotton blue staining.
