Abstract

bstract This study examined the impact of tax laws on business operations in Nigeria, with a focus on how taxation influences daily business activities, compliance, profitability, and overall sustainability. The research adopted a descriptive survey design, and data were collected from 150 respondents selected through simple random sampling. A structured questionnaire was used to gather information on the influence of tax laws, challenges of tax compliance, the effect of taxation on profitability and growth, and the relationship between tax reforms and business sustainability. The results revealed that tax laws significantly affect key operational areas such as financial planning, pricing, investment decisions, and business expansion. The findings further showed that businesses face major challenges in complying with tax regulations, including multiple taxation, high tax rates, bureaucratic procedures, and inadequate tax awareness. Additionally, the study found that taxation negatively affects profit margins and reinvestment capacity, although tax reforms and digital tax systems have improved transparency and compliance to some extent. The study concludes that while taxation is essential for national development, there is a need for a more business-friendly tax environment that supports growth and sustainability. It recommends simplification of tax processes, reduction of multiple taxation, wider tax education, and enhancement of digital compliance systems to improve business performance and compliance levels.
