PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF AGBALA LEAVES AGAINST SALMONELLA TYPHI
Abstract
Phytochemical and antibacterial activity of Mucuna prureins leaf extract was carried out in this research work. The leaves were collected and shade dried after which it was soaked in methanol for 24hrs. Then it was filtered and concentrated. The qualitative phytochemical analysis was determined. The result revealed the presenceof Alkaloids, saponins, tannins,Flavonoids, whilesteriods and glycosides were absent. The antibacterial activity of the extract was done using the disc diffusion methods. The result showed that different concentrations of the extract was able to inhibit the growth of the test Isolate used. The zones of inhibition recorded are 10mm, 9mm, 7mm, 5mm and 3mm at 100,50, 25 12.5 6.25mg/ml concentrations respectively. The result also showed that 6.25 mg.ml was the minimium Inhibitory concentration of the extract while the zone of inhibition ofthe control antibiotic employed was 12mm.The result of this study proves that Mucuna prureins leaf extract is medicinal and effective against Salmonella typhi hence can be used to develop drugs that can be used to treat infections caused by the Salmonella spp.
