Abstract

ABSTRACT The study aimed to examined mass media and promotion of HIV/AIDS prevention among students of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi: A Study of “Vision Project” Program on Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC). It specifically assess the program's effectiveness in increasing HIV/AIDS awareness; impact on students' attitudes and preventive behaviors; and challenges associated with using mass media for this purpose. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, with a population of 10,429 students. A sample size of 375 respondents was selected using stratified random sampling, and data were collected via a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The major findings revealed that the "Vision Project Program" was highly effective in increasing students' knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention, reducing misconceptions, and fostering more empathetic attitudes towards people living with HIV. Regression analysis confirmed a significant positive relationship between the program and improved awareness and prevention outcomes. However, challenges such as limited radio access, language barriers (use of formal English), persistent cultural stigma, and underutilization of social media platforms were identified as impediments to its full effectiveness. The study recommends that BRC should expand radio coverage and on-campus outreach, integrate peer-led campaigns, adopt multilingual and culturally sensitive messaging, and leverage social media platforms to enhance the reach and impact of the "Vision Project Program" among the student population.
