Abstract

ABSTRACT The study focused on the synthesis and characterization of a Schiff base ligand (HL) and its corresponding metal complex derived from Anisaldehyde and Ethylenediamine. The synthesized ligand was characterized based on its physical properties such as color, yield, and melting point, as well as infrared (IR) spectroscopy, which confirmed the presence of key functional groups including the azomethine (C=N) and hydroxyl (O–H) groups. Upon coordination with a metal ion, notable shifts in the IR absorption bands were observed, indicating successful complexation through the azomethine nitrogen and phenolic oxygen atoms. The resulting metal complex was found to be stable, with solubility in organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol, and chloroform, but insoluble in water due to its nonpolar nature. The findings suggest that the Schiff base and its complex possess strong chelating abilities and structural stability, making them potentially useful in coordination chemistry, analytical applications, and biological studies.
