A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY ON THE CONCEPT OF EUTHANASIA VIZ-A-VIZ IT’S LEGAL, MORAL AND ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The concept of euthanasia has been debated throughout human history, with its legalization and technique potentially separating the past from the present. Euthanasia, the practice of ending a patient’s life to relieve suffering due to severe illnesses or agony, has been a controversial topic in various countries, including Nigeria. It has legal, social, political, moral, and ethical implications, impacting cultural, economic, and political aspects of society. If legalized in Nigeria, it could lead to social controversies, patient autonomy, and potential misuse of human life. This project examined the concept of euthanasia in Nigeria, its legal, ethical, and social implications, and recommended policymakers to raise awareness, develop a robust legal framework, prioritize palliative care services, review existing penal codes, and establish mechanisms for monitoring and evaluating euthanasia laws. The research used a doctrinal “black letter” technique, focusing on primary sources like legislation, the Constitution, and law reports, as well as secondary sources like online sites, law journals, and publications.
