Abstract

The study of plant phytochemicals are an important factor in the determination of the medicinal potentials of the natural plant. In this study, the phytochemical analysis of soursop stem bark was carried out. In this study, the fresh plant was dried, pulverized and 20g of the powdered sample was macerated with 100ml of methanol. The mixture was allowed to stand for 24hrs and the filtrate was collected and concentrated on a water bath and was used for the analysis. From the analysis, the soursop stem bark showed more elaborate phytochemical constituents that are of medicinal value. From the result, the extract showed the presence of tannins, flavones, terpenoids, glycosides and triterpenoids. These constituents have proven to be of medicinal value and have been applied in clinical studies. The concentrations of these constituents were found to be moderate as the extract showed 1.0431mg/L tannins, 2.0415mg/L flavones, 5.719mg/L terpenoids and 0.0481mg/L glycosides. These concentrations were found to be safe for consumption and application in medicinal science. Further studies are recommended for the purification of the identified bioactive constituents.
