AN APPRAISAL OF THE LEVEL OF IMPLEMENTATION OF MEDIA IN NIGERIA (A STUDY OF THE BROADCASTING COOPERATION OF OYO STATE)
Abstract
Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) faces substantial challenges in the effective implementation of media policies. While the corporation plays a vital role in disseminating information to the public, especially at the state level, it is limited by financial, technological, and political constraints. BCOS’s partial implementation of media policies reflects the broader difficulties faced by public broadcasters in Nigeria. These challenges undermine the corporation’s ability to fully realize its potential as a public service broadcaster, capable of offering balanced, diverse, and high-quality content. The study underscores the need for substantial reforms to enhance BCOS’s
operational efficiency, independence, and technological capabilities.
Furthermore, the study highlights the negative impact of political interference on the editorial independence of BCOS. This hinders the corporation's ability to provide impartial and diverse viewpoints, which are critical for fostering democratic discourse and public participation. Ultimately, BCOS needs to address its technological and funding challenges to remain relevant
in the rapidly evolving media landscape, particularly with the rise of digital media platforms. Without significant changes, BCOS risks losing its relevance among younger, digitally-savvy audiences
