Abstract

The study was carried out to examine the effect of instructional conversation and word wall teaching strategies on students’ academic performance in Chemistry in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. In order to achieve this purpose, three objectives, three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design for the study was quasi-experimental design. The population of this study comprised 1905 Senior Secondary School One (SS1) Students in the sixteen (16) public secondary schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area for 2022/2023 session. A sample of 96 students was selected for the study. Simple random sampling technique was for this selection. A researcher developed instrument tagged “Chemistry Performance Test (CPT)” was used for data collection. The instrument was subjected to face and content validity. A reliability coefficient of .82 was obtained for the instrument using Kuder- Richardson 20 formula. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions while independent t-test was used for testing the hypotheses. The findings of this study showed that there is significant difference in the mean performance scores of chemistry students when taught the concept of homologous series using instructional conversation and word wall teaching strategies; there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores of male and female chemistry students when taught the concept of homologous series using instructional conversation teaching strategy; there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores of male and female chemistry students when taught the concept of homologous series using word wall teaching strategy. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that word wall teaching strategy enhance students’ academic performance in Chemistry more than the instructional conversation teaching strategy in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. It was recommended among others that, seminars and workshops should be organized by government to train teachers on the use of word walls teaching strategy for teaching Chemistry concepts.
