Abstract

ABSTRACT Youth involvement in gang activities has become a growing concern in Maiduguri, particularly within the Abuja Sheraton community where the Malians gang has gained increasing influence. Despite government efforts to ban political thuggery (ECOMOG) and reduce youth restiveness, many young people continue to engage in violent and antisocial behaviors, creating significant challenges for community security and social development. This study examined the factors that influence youth participation in the Malians gang, the perceptions they hold about gang culture, and the social conditions that make them vulnerable to recruitment. The research adopted a descriptive survey design using a structured questionnaire administered to 150 youths in the Abuja Sheraton community. Data were analyzed using simple frequency counts and percentage distribution. Findings revealed that socioeconomic hardship, unemployment, peer pressure, and weak parental supervision are the major drivers of youth involvement in the Malians gang. Respondents also indicated that gang membership provides a sense of belonging, protection, and identity, even though it exposes them to illegal activities and violence. The study further showed that many youths view gang culture as a pathway to social recognition, while others see it as an escape from poverty and community neglect. The results confirmed that most respondents demonstrated attitudes consistent with known risk factors for gang involvement. The study concludes that the problem of youth gang participation in Abuja Sheraton is multifaceted, rooted in economic, social, and environmental factors that shape youth behavior. It recommends that government and community stakeholders invest in youth empowerment, skills training, improved education, and community policing as strategic approaches to reducing gang recruitment. Strengthening parental involvement and providing mentorship programmes were also identified as essential for preventing youth engagement in criminal networks.
