EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF DIGITIZATION OF LIBRARY RESOURCES AT SA’ADU ZUNGUR UNIVERSITY, BAUCHI
Abstract
This study explores the impact of digitization on library services at Sa’adu Zungur
University Library, Bauchi. The research was conducted to assess the current status of
digitization, evaluate its effect on the quality of library services, identify challenges
encountered in the digitization process, and propose strategies to improve the
digitization of resources. A descriptive survey research design was employed, with data
collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 200 respondents, including
students, faculty members, and library staff. Data analysis was conducted using
descriptive statistics, with the findings presented in tables and percentages. The results
of the study indicate that digitization has significantly enhanced the accessibility and
utilization of library resources at Sa’adu Zungur University. Approximately 70% of
respondents reported that digitization has made it easier to access library materials,
while 65% of library staff noted improvements in the efficiency of library operations.
However, the study identified several challenges that hinder the full implementation of
digitization initiatives. These include inadequate funding (75% of respondents), lack of
technical expertise (60%), technical issues such as system downtime (50%), and
resistance to change (40%).Based on these findings, the study recommends increased
funding for digitization projects, continuous training and professional development for
library staff, proactive management of technical issues, and the implementation of
comprehensive user education programs. Furthermore, it suggests developing a
comprehensive digitization strategy, strengthening collaboration with external
stakeholders, and conducting regular assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of
digitization initiatives. The study concludes that while digitization has positively
impacted library services at Sa’adu Zungur University, addressing the identified
challenges will be essential to maximizing its potential benefits. It also recommends
further research to explore the long-term sustainability of digitization efforts, the impact
of digitization on user satisfaction, and comparative studies of digitization practices in
academic libraries.
