DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A GAS LEAKAGE DETECTOR, WITH MULTI-LEVEL LED INDICATION AND SMS NOTIFICATION (SEVEN SEGMENT DISPLAY UNIT TECHNIQUE)
Abstract
The proliferation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for domestic and industrial use has created a pressing need for robust and effective safety systems. Traditional gas detectors, which rely solely on local audible alarms, are limited in their ability to provide adequate warning to occupants who may be away from the premises. This critical deficiency can lead to delayed responses and significantly increased safety risks during a gas leak event. Furthermore, existing advanced systems often depend on complex and costly Wi-Fi infrastructure, making them inaccessible for many users and vulnerable to network outages. This project directly addresses these limitations by designing and implementing a Smart Gas Leakage Detection with Multi-Level Indication and SMS Notification system.
The core of the system is an Arduino Uno microcontroller, chosen for its reliability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of programming. It serves as the central processing unit, collecting data from various sensors and controlling the output components. Gas concentration is accurately measured using a sensitive MQ-6 semiconductor gas sensor, which is specifically calibrated to detect LPG with high precision. To provide immediate and intuitive visual feedback, the system incorporates a multi-level LED indicator: a green LED signifies normal, a blue LED indicates a minor gas presence, a yellow LED warns of a moderate leak, and a red LED signals a critical and dangerous concentration.
The project's most significant innovation is the integration of a SIM800L GSM module. This module enables the system to operate independently of a home Wi-Fi network. When the MQ-6 sensor detects a critical gas concentration, the Arduino triggers the SIM800L to send a predefined SMS alert to a designated mobile phone number. This ensures that the user receives an instant notification of a potential hazard, regardless of their location, thereby enabling a swift and informed response.
The developed system is a comprehensive, low-cost, and reliable solution that bridges the gap between basic alarms and complex IoT devices. By combining a multi-level visual alarm with a dependable, cellular-based remote notification system, this project significantly enhances home safety and offers a practical, modern solution to the risk associated with unmonitored gas leaks.
