Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the gastro protective effect of garlic on ethanol induced gastric ulceration in Wistar rats. Twenty (20) healthy female adult Wistar rats of average weight (90-150g) were divided into four (4) groups, with each having five (5) animals {-n=5} as follows; Group I: Control (0.2ml of distilled water), Group 2: Omeprazole (20 mg/kg), Group 3: Garlic extract (low dose, 300mg/kg) Group 4: Garlic extract (high dose 600mg/kg). The rats were fed with standard diet (vital grower feed Nig. LTD) and had free access to tap water daily. At the expiration of 14 days, the animals were sacrificed and their stomach was removed for analysis. The analysis was used to take the record of the ulcer index, number of ulcers per animal, ulcer severity score, percentage of animals with ulcers and percentage ulcer inhibition levels. The results revealed that administration of garlic extracts significantly reduced (P
