Abstract

This study investigated the Effects of Demonstration Method on students' Achievement of Senior Secondary School in Chemistry in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State, Nigeria. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the demonstration method improves students’ academic performance compared to the lecture method, to examine gender differences among students taught using the demonstration method, and to compare the performance of urban and rural students under the same instructional approach. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The population comprised all SSS II chemistry students in Maiduguri Metropolis. A total of 75 students were purposively selected and divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected using the Chemistry Achievement Test (CAT), consisting of 30 objective questions covering key chemistry topics. Data analysis was done using mean, standard deviation, and t-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that students taught with the demonstration method achieved higher mean scores than those taught with the lecture method. There was no significant difference between the performance of male and female students, nor between urban and rural students taught using the demonstration method. The study concluded that the demonstration method is an effective instructional strategy that enhances students’ understanding, motivation, and retention of chemistry concepts. It was recommended that chemistry teachers adopt the demonstration method regularly, and that educational authorities provide adequate facilities and training to support its implementation.
