Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate liver enzyme ALT and AST in malaria patients in Madonna University Teaching Hospital (MUTH), Elele, Rivers State, to ascertain if there is liver dysfunction/impairment in them by comparing them with subjects not infected with malaria (control). The study consists of 30 known malaria patients (15 male and 15 female) and 10 healthy subjects (5 male and 5 female). An informed consent was obtained from each of the participants in the study and the research was approved by the ethical committee of Madonna university, Elele Rivers state. Venous blood sample collected aseptically from a cubital vein were assayed for ALT and AST in Madonna University Teaching Hospital (MUTH) laboratory using Reitman and Frankel method. The results obtained were analyzed using statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 25.0 for windows 10. Values p0.05 not significant. This study revealed that there is no significant increase (P>0.05) in serum concentration of ALT in test group (6.6 ± 4.60 IU/L) when compared with that of the control group (6.5 ± 3.20 IU/L). There is also a significant increase (P
