ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF MICRO ORGANISM INVOLVED IN THE SPOILAGE OF ORANGE FRUIT (CITRUS SINENSIS) SOLD IN GADAU TOWN, ITAS/GADAU LOCAL GOVERNMENT, BAUCHI STATE.
Abstract
This study focused on the isolation and identification of microorganisms involved in the spoilage of orange fruit (Citrus sinensis) sold in Gadau town, Itas/Gadau Local Government Area, Bauchi State. The research aimed to determine the types of microorganisms responsible for fruit deterioration, as well as their prevalence and potential impact on public health. Samples of spoiled oranges were collected from different markets within Gadau town and analyzed using standard microbiological techniques, including culturing, Gram staining, and biochemical tests for microbial identification. The results revealed the presence of various spoilage-causing microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, with species of Aspergillus, Penicillium, and some bacterial pathogens being the most frequently isolated. The study highlights the importance of proper handling, storage, and hygiene practices to minimize post-harvest losses and safeguard consumer health. These findings provide a useful basis for future research on fruit spoilage prevention and food safety in the study are
