Abstract

Abstract The study evaluated the in vitro antioxidant activities of Ocimum gratissimum (scent leaf) extract obtained from Minna metropolis. Phytochemical screening revealed high concentrations of phenols (478.50 ± 1.07 mg/100 g), flavonoids (85.19 ± 0.45 mg/100 g), tannins (131.47 ± 1.18 mg/100 g), saponins (125.47 ± 0.59 mg/100 g), and alkaloids (35.18 ± 0.36 mg/100 g). Antioxidant activities were assessed using DPPH radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and inhibition of lipid peroxidation assays. The extract exhibited concentration-dependent antioxidant effects across all assays, with higher activities observed at 200 µg/mL compared to lower concentrations. Although the activities were significantly (P < 0.05) lower than those of ascorbic acid, the extract demonstrated considerable free radical scavenging and reducing capacities. The findings suggest that Ocimum gratissimum leaves contain potent natural
