Abstract

ABSTRACT Access to clean and sustainable water remains a fundamental challenge in many rural communities in Nigeria. This study focuses on groundwater assessment and borehole development in Umuakatawom, Umobiakwa Community, Abia State. The research evaluates the hydrogeological characteristics of the area, identifies suitable aquifer zones, and assesses groundwater quality for domestic use. Field investigations, including geophysical surveys and water sampling, were conducted to determine subsurface formations and water-bearing zones. The results reveal that the study area possesses viable aquifers capable of supporting borehole development, although variations in depth and yield exist due to geological heterogeneity. Water quality analysis indicates that most parameters fall within acceptable standards for drinking water, though minor concerns in specific locations suggest the need for treatment before consumption. The study concludes that groundwater remains a reliable source of water for the community if properly managed. This research contributes to sustainable water resource development and provides recommendations for effective borehole construction, maintenance, and long-term groundwater management.
