Abstract

This research work focused on Akwa Ibom State University students’ perception of immorality and indecency in the 2022 Big Brother Naija Reality TV Show. The study was guided with four objectives. The main objective was to investigate how audience perceive the portrayal of immorality and indecency in the 2022 Big Brother Naija Reality TV Show. Survey method was adopted and the instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire. The population of the study according to the current attendance of Akwa Ibom State University students was 13,886 out of which 400 were sampled using Taro Yamani’s formula. Data collected was analyzed in tables and simple percentages. The findings revealed a spectrum of opinions among the participants regarding the level of immorality and indecency in the Big Brother Naija show. While some viewed the show as harmless entertainment, others expressed concerns about its potential negative impact on societal values and moral standards. Themes that emerged from the analysis included perceptions of promiscuity, substance abuse, objectification of participants, and the influence of media on societal norms. The study concluded that most audience of BBN show agrees that the show has only entertainment values and less value educationally and morally. This then calls for the broadcasting censorship board and the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) to review the contents of the show, package the whole show in a particular channel without spill over or weekly reviews to other channels. The study therefore recommend among others that the Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) should place a total ban on any form of indecent public broadcast of programmes on television.
