A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE 1ST CENTURY CHRISTIANITY AND THE CONTEMPORARY CHURCH
Abstract
This study examines the role of women in the 1st century Christianity and compared to their role in the contemporary church. In the early church women like Mary, Magdalen, Priscilla and Phoebe played significant roles in the ministry, leadership and evangelism as seen in biblical accounts. In the contemporary church, women's roles vary widely depending on denominational and cultural contexts . The role of women in the church has been a reason of controversy throughout Christian history, despite their significant contributions to the early Christian community, women's participation in church leadership and decision-making processes has been restricted and limited. However, as the church developed and became more institutionalized, women's roles were gradually diminished, and their ability to participate in leadership and decision-making positions was severely restricted. Many churches still struggle to fully integrate women into leadership roles and provide equal opportunities for women to serve in the church. The study compares women's roles across different denomination and also recommend ways that will lead to an improved status of women in the contemporary church and society. The findings reveals that while the early church recognized and valued women's contributions but theological development restricted their roles. The study made use of historical and descriptive research methodology. It recommends adopting equitable approaches to leadership and ministry ensuring that womens potential is fully harnessed in advancing the mission of the church.
