Abstract

Abstract This study examines the impact of the Baban Bola programme on environmental hygiene practices among residents of Bulabulin Ward, Maiduguri, Borno State. The objectives were to determine the level of residents’ awareness of the programme, assess how it influences their hygiene practices, and identify the major challenges affecting its effectiveness in the community. A quantitative research method was adopted, utilizing a structured questionnaire administered to 381 respondents selected through stratified random sampling. The findings revealed that the programme significantly improved environmental hygiene, with a large proportion of respondents reporting better waste disposal habits, more regular participation in community sanitation activities, and a reduction in indiscriminate dumping. However, challenges such as inadequate equipment, limited programme coverage, and weak community engagement were also identified. The study concludes that the Baban Bola programme plays a vital role in promoting environmental cleanliness in Bulabulin Ward, but its impact can be enhanced through increased support, expanded outreach, and greater community involvement. It recommends improving programme logistics, expanding awareness campaigns, and strengthening sanitation education to sustain environmental hygiene in the area.
