Abstract

Education is a fundamental human right that should be accessible to every individual, regardless of gender, background, or social status. This project examines the persistent challenges that hinder the realization of gender equality in Nigeria’s educational system, focusing particularly on the barriers faced by girls. Despite numerous policies and international commitments aimed at promoting equal access to education, many girls in Nigeria still encounter obstacles such as cultural norms that prioritize boys’ education, economic hardships that limit school attendance, and inadequate enforcement of education policies. This project applies a qualitative method, including interviews conducted via telephone, email, and face-to-face with education consultants, community leaders, and social workers, alongside a thorough review of existing literature, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the socio-cultural, economic, and institutional factors that impede girls’ educational progress. The findings reveal that while progress has been made in some areas, significant disparities remain in enrollment, retention, and academic achievement between boys and girls.
