ASSESSMENT OF SELECTED SACHET BRAND WATER FOR ITS PHYSIOCHEMICAL AND MICROBIOLOGICAL TEST WITHIN FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ADO-EKITI AND ITS ENVIRONMENT.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the physiochemical and mircrobial quality of sachet brand water sold at Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti. A total of fifteen samples from different brands were analysed for pH, turbidity, and conductivity. Physiochemical parameters were measured using standard methods, while total coliforms was evaluates using the following methods: Violet red bile agar (VRBA), Petrifilm High Sensitivity coliform count plate (PHSCCP) and Trypticase Soy agar with VRBA overlay (TSA/ URBA).Results showed that majority of the samples falls between the ranges recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) and Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) (6.5- 8.5)for pH, and turbidity (1-5NTU),and conductivity (100-400uS/cm) meet the limit. Moreover, almost 70% of the samples were contaminated with coliforms. The findings indicate that sachet brand water sold at Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti and its environment may pose health risks to consumers due to inadequate treatment and poor handling practices. Regular monitoring and enforcement of quality standards are necessary to ensure safe drinking water.
