Abstract

The present study was done to find out the relationship of haemoglobin level, erythrocyte sedimentation and body mass index among male students in Madonna university. There is a paucity of data correlating haemoglobin with BMI in this context. Abnormal BMI is associated with altered haemoglobin concentrations. This study was done using 73 male subjects between the age of 18-25. BMI was calculated by Quetelet’s index and haemoglobin concentration was estimated by using Cyanmetheamoglobin method using Drabkin’s solution, erythrocyte sedimentation rate was estimated using Westergren method. Correlation between haemoglobin concentration, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and BMI were analysed using SPSS version 20. The mean haemoglobin levels in underweight was statistically lower than normal weight, overweight and obese subjects ( 12.94 ±15.69 ±14.17 ±13.02). The mean erythrocyte sedimentation level was statistically higher in underweight than normal weight overweight and obese subjects (13.67± 7.50± 8.62±11.18).on comparing the three groups of BMI, it was seen that there was no significant relationship in haemoglobin and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p> 0.05). Abnormal BMI, whether underweight and overweight/obese, increases the risk of anaemia. There is no negative significant relationship of Hb between individuals with abnormal BMI, there is no significant positive relationship of ESR between individuals with abnormal BMI.
