MOLECULR CHARACTERIZATION OF VIRUS INFECTING LAGENARIA BREVIFLORA (CALABASH)
Abstract
Symptoms of virus infection were observed on Lagenaria breviflora in some gardens in University of Cross River State. This was aimed at characterizing virus infecting Lagenaria breviflora. Infected leaf samples were obtained and tested using RT-PCR and gene sequence analysis as diagnostic tools. The result obtained by RT-PCR with cylindrical inclusion (CI) primer showed a fragment of predicted size 700 bp. Sequence alignment and analysis showed that the virus isolate has 86% sequence identity with Zuchini yellow mosaic virus confirming that the virus under study is ZYMV. This is the first report of detection of virus infecting this plant in Cross River State.
