DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN IOT BASED GAS LEAKAGE DETECTOR USING ARDUINO
Abstract
The topic of this project is the design and implementation of an IOT based gas leakage detector using Arduino. The main aim of the project is to design and construct an IoT- Based Intelligent Gas Leakage Detector and Temperature Sensor using Arduino, LCD, buzzer and a Servomotor. The system consists of a gas sensor, thermistor, LCD, ESP8266 WiFi module, servomotor, buzzer and a Whatsapp notification service. All the components were interfaced to the micro-controller. The system was programmed using C++ programming language. After implementation, measurements were carried out on the sensors using a meter rule, to determine the maximum range of detection for both sensors; for the gas sensor (without using the extra enclosure) it was found to be 10cm, after which the success rate starts to drop considerably (below 75%) if the distance exceeds this range. For the thermistor, it was found to be 3cm, after which the success starts to drop (below 75%) when the distance exceeds this range. Using the extra enclosure, the gas sensor was able to detect gas leakage from any distance as long as the leakage took place inside the extra enclosure which was represented using a trunking pipe. The components responsible for the response of the system when either of the setpoints have been exceeded, were tested for their maximum response time; servomotor response time was 4.01 seconds, Whatsapp notification service response time was 4.53 seconds and buzzer response time was 4.03. According to the results gotten from the tests carried on the system, it is feasible to make use of the system for timely detection of gas leakages in applications that require the use of LPG gas.
