Abstract

Microplastics have emerged as a critical environmental concern due to their widespread presence and persistence in aquatic ecosystems. These tiny plastic particles, less than 5 millimeters in diameter, originate from the fragmentation of larger plastic debris and the direct release of microplastic products into the environment. They have been detected in various water bodies worldwide, from the most remote oceanic regions to urban rivers and lakes (Lebreton et al., 2017).
