THE EFFECTS OF GROUP DISCUSSION AND PERSONAL STUDY ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. ( A CASE STUDY OF SOME SELECTED STUDENT IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY, ADEYEMI FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION).
Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of group discussion and personal study methods on
students’ performance in the department of chemistry at Adeyemi Federal University of
Education, Ondo.
Three (3) research questions and research hypotheses with experimental research adopted, a
continuous assessment test of twenty (20) multiple choice was set and a 10-item questionnaire
was administered on a total number of 150 students (75 from Degree 3 and 75 from Degree
4) .The data collected from the respondents were analyzed using mean score and T-test for the
hypotheses.
The results showed that for Degree 4 students, a contrary trend was observed. Group discussion
proved to be more effective in enhancing academic performance. The average performance for
Degree 4 students with group discussion was 58.68. While, the average performance for Degree
4 students on personal study was 53.68. The difference in performance between the two methods
was 5.0 points in favour of group discussion, with a standard deviation of 1.77, to show that
Degree 4 students, on average, performed better with group discussion than with personal study.
The study concluded that both group discussions and personal study were effective for chemistry
achievement, but their effectiveness varies depending on individual preferences and learning
contexts. Group discussions are most effective when combine with personal study
