Abstract

ABSTRACT This study explores the influence of political socialization on political participation and the entrenchment of democratic values in Ondo State during the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari (2015–2023). It also investigates the challenges that hindered democratic consolidation and assesses how Buhari’s policies and style of governance either promoted or undermined democratic norms. Anchored in a qualitative research design, the study relied on interviews with diverse participants including youths, market women, professionals, and civil society members, to gather perspectives on political education, media influence, civic behavior, and governmental policies. Thematic analysis revealed that social media, peer discussions, religious institutions, and family interactions were major agents of political socialization. While some participants became more politically aware and active, others expressed disillusionment due to electoral violence, government suppression of dissent, and poor economic conditions. The findings show a paradox: political socialization increased awareness but did not consistently translate to civic participation, largely due to systemic distrust and autocratic tendencies under Buhari’s leadership. The study concludes that for democratic values to thrive, Nigeria must strengthen institutional accountability, promote inclusive political education, and protect civic freedoms. Recommendations were offered to enhance democratic engagement, especially among marginalized groups, in the post-Buhari era.
