Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pear (Pyrus communus) leaf meal supplementation on the hematology of broiler chickens. A total number of 96 birds of commercial breeds was used for the experiment. A total of Ninety-six (96) birds were randomly allocated into four treatments and replicated six times with four (4) birds per replicate. Treatment 1 was control diet i.e. diet with no supplement, treatments Two, Three and four contained 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6% respectively. At the end of the feeding trial, three (3) birds were randomly selected from each treatment. Blood samples were collected from the Jungular vein using a 5ml syringe and placed in sterilized bottles containing Ethylende Diamine Tetra-Acetic (EDTA) anticoagulant for determination of the hematological parameters. The parameters investigated include packed cell volume (PCV) at 38.50±0.50, 36.00±0.00, 37.50±2.50 and 34.50±3.50, red blood cells (RBC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), hemoglobin (Hb), white blood cells (WBC), granulocytes, lymphocytes, and monocytes at 0.06±0.03, 0.03±0.03, 0.04±0.04 and 0.03±0.03. The results showed no statistically significant differences (P>0.05) among the treatment groups for all hematological parameters. The study demonstrates that pear leaf meal supplementation does not significantly alter hematological parameters in broiler chickens, indicating its safety and neutrality regarding blood health.
