THE ROLE OF “ALLURAR CIKIN RUWA’’ HEALTH PROGRAMME ON ALBARKA RADIO IN THE PROMOTION OF HEALTH LIFESTYLE AMONG THE RESIDENTS OF BOGORO LGA
Abstract
Abstract
This study investigated the perception and impact of the Allurar Cikin Ruwa health program broadcast on Albarka Radio among residents of Bogoro Local Government Area (LGA), Bauchi State. Using a descriptive survey design, 381 structured questionnaires were distributed, with 343 returned, representing a 90% response rate. The high return rate enhanced the reliability and validity of the study. Data were analyzed to assess listenership, perceptions of program content, and its influence on health knowledge and behavior. The findings reveal that the program enjoys widespread popularity, with 94.8% of respondents reporting regular listenership. Respondents overwhelmingly agreed that the program discusses important health issues, uses clear and culturally relevant language, and is presented in an engaging manner. Importantly, 97.7% confirmed that they learned new health information, while 91.8% reported adopting healthier habits as a result of the program. The program was also shown to encourage professional health-seeking behavior, increase confidence in health management, and stimulate information sharing within families and communities. Grounded in the Social Learning Theory and Health Belief Model, the study concludes that Allurar Cikin Ruwa is an effective tool for health communication, capable of influencing both knowledge and behavior. It empowers listeners with practical health skills and fosters a community-wide culture of health consciousness. The study recommends sustaining and expanding the program’s scope, strengthening collaboration with health authorities and NGOs, and leveraging community leaders to reinforce its messages. It also suggests further research to examine long-term impacts and compare effectiveness with other media platforms.
