ASSESSING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC ROLE OF KWAYA KUSAR DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (KKDA)
Abstract
This study examines the socio-economic role of the Kwaya Kusar Development Association (KKDA) in the development of Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area of Borno State. The association, formed as a community-based organization, has been actively involved in various development initiatives such as educational support, youth empowerment, infrastructural contribution, and poverty alleviation. Despite government efforts, socio-economic development in rural areas remains slow, therefore raising the need to assess the contribution of community-based associations like KKDA. The study adopted a survey research design, utilizing questionnaires distributed to residents, members of KKDA, community leaders, and beneficiaries. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and percentages. The findings revealed that KKDA has significantly contributed to socio-economic development through skills acquisition programs, educational scholarships, community sensitization, support for vulnerable groups, and improvement of social amenities. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited government partnership, and insecurity hinder its effectiveness. The study concludes that KKDA plays an essential complementary role to government efforts in rural development. It recommends increased funding, stronger collaboration with government and Non-Governmental Organization NGOs, capacity building for members, and improved security measures to enhance project implementation.
