ENHANCING CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS IN SMES
Abstract
This study was undertaken to address the growing cybersecurity vulnerabilities faced by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which are increasingly targeted by cyberattacks due to limited resources, low awareness, and a lack of structured training programs. The main goal of the research was to develop a tailored and interactive cybersecurity awareness program specifically for SMEs. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining qualitative interviews and focus groups with quantitative surveys and assessments to evaluate cybersecurity knowledge before and after training. The solution involved the design and implementation of a web-based training platform using Google Sites, PowerPoint presentations, and Google Forms, covering modules on password security and phishing awareness. The training was tested with SME participants and showed a 95% improvement in cybersecurity awareness levels. Participants demonstrated stronger threat recognition, especially related to phishing, and adopted safer password practices. The findings confirm that customized, low-cost, and scalable cybersecurity training can significantly enhance SME resilience against cyber threats. This project is useful as a practical, cost-effective model for improving cybersecurity in SMEs, enabling them to protect their operations, data, and clients despite limited budgets or technical expertise.
