WASTE IN DEVELOPMENT COUNTRIES: CHALLENGES AND SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS (A STUDY OF ERUWA IBARAPA LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN OYO STATE)
Abstract
This research investigates the challenges and sustainable solutions to waste management in Eruwa, Oyo State, Nigeria. It identifies the main issues affecting waste management, including insufficient waste collection services, lack of proper disposal facilities, limited funding, and low public awareness. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from residents, local authorities, and waste management practitioners.
Findings indicate that improper waste disposal significantly impacts the environment and public health, contributing to water pollution, air quality degradation, and the spread of waterborne diseases. The research highlights the importance of adopting sustainable waste management practices such as recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy technologies. Additionally, it emphasizes the role of community participation and strong government policies in improving waste management systems.
The study concludes that effective waste management in Eruwa requires collaborative efforts among government institutions, private sector stakeholders, and local communities. Recommendations are provided to strengthen waste management practices through enhanced public awareness, the introduction of recycling programs, and the development of robust policy frameworks. By implementing these recommendations, Eruwa can create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for its residents.
