Abstract

Abstract This research study examines the perceptions of journalists regarding social media as an information source and its impact on modern journalism practice. The study explores the transformative role of social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube in news gathering, storytelling, audience engagement, and ethical considerations. Through a comprehensive review of literature and empirical findings, the study illustrates that social media has become an indispensable tool for journalists: providing real-time updates, user-generated content, and diverse perspectives on breaking news and events. Though the study acknowledges the benefits of social media in providing valuable insights into audience interests and preferences, it emphasizes the careful approach taken by journalists in upholding accuracy and credibility, prioritizing fact-checking and validation processes. The research concludes that there is a conscientious and balanced integration of social media within the traditional journalistic framework, with journalists leveraging social media while steadfastly upholding the core principles of accuracy, credibility, and transparency. Building on these findings, the study proposes recommendations to foster ethical and responsible use of social media by journalists. These recommendations include emphasizing fact-checking and validation processes, cultivating a balanced approach to story selection, fostering transparency and behind-the-scenes insights, continuously evaluating the impact on audience interests and preferences, maintaining journalistic integrity amidst speed and accessibility, and promoting ethical and responsible communication. Implementation of these recommendations is aimed at harnessing the power of social media to enrich storytelling, engage with the audience, and uphold the principles of accuracy, credibility, and transparency within journalistic practice.
