TRANSMISSION EFFICIENCY OF MOROCCAN WATERMELON MOSAIC VIRUS BY TWO BIOTYPES OF APHIS SPIRAECOLA ON CUCUMEROPSIS MANNII IN CALABAR
Abstract
The potyvirus, Moroccan watermelon mosaic virus (MWMYV) is one of the disruptive
.iruses plaguing vegetable production in the tropics. Two biotypes of Aphis spiraecola
iesignated I and IT were used in the transmission studies. The experimental design for the
study was 1 x 2 x 4 factorial representing one virus, two aphids and four treatment levels
ar—r anged in a completely randomized design with four levels of treatments and three
- weplications. Aphid number per plant was the parameter adopted to measure the
rS anSsTImTiY ssion efficiency of the virus. The results showed that when a single aphid biotype
vas used per plant, a 20% transmission efficiency was achieved. When the number of
achids per plant were increased to 3, 5 and 7, the percentage increased 80%, 100% and
0% respectively. When the same test was carried out with aphid biotype II for 1, 3, 5
i 7. the transmission efficiency was 40%, 80%, 100% and 00% respectively. When the
=zans of aphid biotypes I and 11 were separated, there were no significant differences in
:ohid number 3, 5 and 7. Significance difference was obtained when aphid number 1 was
o
i 3 in the transmission experiment
