AN ASSESSMENT OF MANAGEMENT OF GARBAGE COLLECTION AND WASTE DISPOSAL IN TALATA MAFARA, ZAMFARA STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study assesses the management of garbage collection and waste disposal in Talata Mafara, a town in Zamfara State, Nigeria. Rapid population growth, urbanization, and economic activities have contributed to increasing waste generation, posing significant challenges for local waste management systems. The study evaluates the efficiency of waste collection, disposal practices, and the role of governmental and private sector involvement in the process.
Data was collected through field observations, surveys of residents, and interviews with key stakeholders such as local authorities and waste management personnel. The findings indicate that the waste management system in Talata Mafara is characterized by inadequate infrastructure, irregular waste collection schedules, and poor disposal methods, including open dumping and burning. These practices contribute to environmental pollution, health hazards, and a diminished quality of life for residents.
Additionally, the lack of public awareness and community participation in waste management exacerbates the problem. Insufficient funding and limited enforcement of waste management regulations further hinder effective service delivery. The study highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions, such as improving waste collection efficiency, investing in proper disposal facilities, and increasing public education on waste management.
Recommendations include the adoption of modern waste management technologies, enhancing government-private partnerships, and developing policies focused on waste reduction, recycling, and public engagement. These measures aim to promote a cleaner and healthier environment in Talata Mafara.
