SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SCHIFF BASE LIGAND DERIVED FROM VANLINE AND ETHLYENEDIAMINE
Abstract
A new Schiff base ligand was synthesized via the condensation reaction of vanillin and ethylenediamine in a 2:1 molar ratio. The reaction proceeded smoothly under reflux in ethanol, producing a yellow crystalline product characteristic of bis-imine formation. The ligand was characterized using FT-IR, FT-IR spectra confirmed the formation of the azomethine (-C=N-) functional group with a strong band near 1620 cm'1. The ligand exhibited good thermal stability and moderate solubility in common organic solvents. Overall, the successful synthesis and spectroscopic characterization demonstrate that the yanillin-ethylened iamine Schiff base is a promising precursor for coordination complexes and potential applications in catalysis, sensing, and bioactivity studies.
